Overview

The overview for this assignment is very similar to the overview for the reflection, so don’t be alarmed if a lot of the information here looks familiar! :)

Objective: You selected 4 concepts/topics for your problem sets. The purpose of this summary is to explain why you selected these topics and explain how you see them fitting together into the larger picture of this class.

Audience: The summary is for me (Dr. Claire) to help me understand the topics you chose and how you see them relating to each other and to the larger ideas of the course.

Medium: Similar to the problem sets, you can choose a medium that works well for you. However, keep in mind that your medium should allow you to share quite a bit of your thoughts, so a slideshow/PowerPoint may not be the best option here since they are usually used for bullet points and short pieces of writing (although feel free to try it if you want!).

You can write formally with complete sentences and in paragraph form, or you can be more casual and creative with maybe recording an audio or video summary (or any alternatives you can think of!).

Minimum Requirements: Your summary must include the following:

1. A list the topics you selected and the mediums you chose for each problem set.
2. An explanation of how you see the topics relating to each other within the larger context of this course (prompts to help you with this are in the instructions)

Because you can use different mediums for your summary, I have done my best to provide various types of minimum requirements to give you a sense for how much you need to include. Basically, I want to give you room to be creative while also providing a baseline of my expectations so you can feel confident in your work!

• If you write a word document, your summary should be a minimum of 250 words. This is a baseline requirement, and you can write more if you want!
• If you handwrite the summary using an essay-style format, it should be a minimum of 3 paragraphs in length.
• If you write the summary in another way, the written content you produce should be above the 250 words or the 3-paragraph minimum requirement.
• If you record an audio or video summary, it should be 2.5-3 minutes or longer. It is difficult for me to know how to translate a word count into minutes, so feel free to do fewer minutes if you feel you are meeting the other requirements! Or, you could write a script that is at least 250 words/3 paragraphs and then use that as your baseline for length.

Instructions

Here is a recommended outline for your summary:

1. First, you should list your topics and explain what medium(s) you used to make your problem sets (e.g. a slideshow, poster, word document, website, video, etc.).
2. Then, you should situate your topics within the context of the course. Here are some possible prompts you can choose to answer in this part your summary (you do NOT need to discuss all of these — they are just ideas):
   • Is there a common theme in your topics? How are the topics related? Or, in what ways are your topics different?
   • How do you see your topics telling a story about the course and what we have learned?
   • What do your topics leave out about the course? Are there big areas of what we have learned that are missing from your topics?

You will turn in your Summary as a file upload as part of your Concept Portfolio Final Draft submission.
